Can we get your take on some of the clues from the final episode and what might be coming in the upcoming season? I'm curious to hear some of your theories!

I have some theories. Dunno how accurate they are, but I guess we’ll find out! First thing’s first:

I would like to point out the ‘disillusioned’. It appears just as much, if not more, than ‘liar’, which is very interesting to me. I count four ‘disillusioned’s and a partial one on the right. What might we deduce about that?

This may come as a shock to some of you, but I truly believe that Mary was trying to start over. I believe she fell in love with John Watson and honestly wanted to start a family with him, safe and sound, leaving her former life behind her. Now, wait. Stay with me. This is where the disillusioned bit comes in.

I have a niggling suspicion that Mary was working with Moriarty. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but hear me out. If Mary was working with Moriarty, and Moriarty ‘died’, that would give Mary a good opportunity to start fresh. Her boss is dead, his network will soon be falling to pieces, there’s really no better time to ‘get out’.

As for why Mary was working for Moriarty (if, indeed, she was, but let’s pretend for a moment), it could be any number of reasons. Moriarty is very manipulative, as we know, and he basically sweet talks people into committing murder. Think about it. The cabbie, Raul. And he doesn’t care if they get caught in the end. It’s just a game. And Mary, in all honestly, would be just another game to him.

Maybe he tells her he can make her records disappear. Give her the life she always wanted. Just play this game with me. Just aim your gun at Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. No one’s going to get hurt.

And Mary falls for it. Disillusioned. Hook, line, and sinker.

She puts herself in John’s path. She’s in love. She understands his heartbreak because Lord knows she’s suffered enough of that during her life as an assassin for hire. She’s happy. She’s about to get married. And then Sherlock comes back to life.

I would say that Sherlock making a reappearance has little to no effect on Mary, but CAM has been attempting to get to Mycroft, right? The only way to get to Mycroft is through Sherlock, who suddenly decides to stop being dead. The way to get to Sherlock is John and the way to get to John is…oh. Well, what do you know? John is engaged to a killer. And CAM, like the shark he is, sinks his teeth into Mary. Which she won’t take lying down. She loves John more than anything. So, naturally, she bites back. And nothing will stop her from her goal. Not even Sherlock.

image

Pardon the bad photo, but from what we see here, CAM is reaching for something off screen.

image

At this angel you can tell he was reaching for his phone. But how did Mary not notice? Since there was a mirror behind Sherlock?

image

The mirror isn’t directly behind Sherlock, after all. It’s a bit off center. And from this angle we can’t see CAM. This may be a stretch, but maybe Mary didn’t see him reaching for the phone. However:

image

It’s pretty obvious what he was doing. Now what would CAM be doing with his phone? More than likely calling for help. Not necessarily ‘calling’. He probably has a code or an alarm or something similar that either connects him to the police, the hospital, his staff, all three at once? He spends his time ‘acquiring assets’. He’s not an idiot. He knows someone will attempt to murder him. I’m sure he has some kind of ace up his sleeve.

According to Sherlock, Mary grabs the phone as soon as she takes out CAM. Could be she tried to phone for help, but I have a feeling she was seeing what CAM was up to while she wasn’t looking. Noticed he’d signaled for help, and ‘left the way she came’.

image

We know that John also phoned the ambulance. Normally, as someone has mentioned before, the emergency operator would inform you that someone is already on their way. This obviously didn’t happen. Why? Because CAM used his own people, his own code, to call for help maybe? And perhaps that wouldn’t go through the ‘normal channels’, leaving the operator to respond to John as if no emergency had been called to attention.

Now back to Mary.

We’ve established she’s disillusioned. She loves John more than anything, craves a ‘normal’ life, and undoubtedly pissed as hell that the truth has come out. I don’t think she intended to kill Sherlock. I also don’t think she intended for him to live. I think she did what comes naturally to her and eliminated a threat, just like she was going to eliminate CAM. Impulsively, I believe she doesn’t necessarily want to kill Sherlock. Mostly because of what Sherlock said about shooting him in the head. It would have been cleaner, more efficient, but she panicked. And, while still making a kill shot, didn’t go for the obvious. And for a trained assassin like her not to take a shot like that must mean something.

That being said, I don’t think she actively tried to save Sherlock’s life. Whether Sherlock believes she did is something else altogether. I can’t really read him when he’s talking John down in 221B.

image

He’s either lying or he believes Mary saved him. I think he respects Mary. Otherwise, he’d have no sympathy for her whatsoever. I think he acknowledges she’s trying to live a better life, if nothing else. And he knows that she loves John and will protect him at all costs, which I’m sure he views as a pro rather than a con. But you know. Sherlock and his warped priorities. Once he realizes the only way to keep Mary (and therefore John) safe is to kill CAM, I bet you dollars to donuts he’s happy in the knowledge that John will be well looked after. And with someone that can ‘entertain’ him.

But honestly. Sherlock is a self deprecating idiot. This leads me to my predictions.

AGRA. Is the memorystick empty?

image

It could be either/or, in my opinion. In canon, Mary Morstan is left without the AGRA treasure because there’s none left. (More or less.) So this could either mean the drive is empty or a reference to how John refuses to read it’s contents. Doesn’t really matter, in the end. Because I believe Mary’s past is going to come back to haunt her regardless.

Now, I can’t say one way or another whether John forgives Mary wholly and completely. I’m assuming yes, or mostly, in spite of the evidence otherwise because John is nothing if not loyal. This will play a huge part in season 4, I think, so hold on to your hats.

In my mind, the Christmas special will revolve around the baby. Because that’s adorable, isn’t it? Just picture Sherlock Holmes and John Watson shopping for diapers. Are you doing it? Have you done it? Don’t tell me that’s not hella cute. Christmas episode, family, compassion, the delivery of a baby, John and Sherlock running around like chickens with their heads cut off, and something along the lines of figuring out what the hell is going one with Moriarty.

He may be alive, he may not. I really can’t say. But that’s beside the point. I think the Christmas episode, while largely fluffy and gut wrenching in turns, will leave on a questioning note. Something about Mary, something about Moriarty. Because what would be Mary’s worst nightmare? Moriatry taking back his promise. Moriarty taking away her family, taking away John.

Season 4 will be the usual. Cases and stuff and more cases, with possibly the threat of Moriarty (or another big bad) hanging over their heads. What I imagine will happen will be Mary’s past proving detrimental to her life with John. Somehow, someway. Someone, or someones, is after her. And, by extension, her child and John.

Bear with me. I’m almost done.

My prediction is that Mary will have to go into hiding. To protect herself, to protect her child. And John will have to make a decision. He either goes with Mary or he stays. And that is the cliffie for season 4.

What do you think?

*cough* John (and Mary) faced this exact issue in my post-series 3 angst fest On the Other Side /shameless self-promotion

Really great meta, and I think you’re onto something with the Christmas family fluff set up to some angsty heart ache.

Oh god I was so worried about this too

The more he talks about this upcoming season and the stuff he won’t put up with, the more I’m starting to believe he killed Steven Moffat and keeps telling everyone he’s on vacation while writing all his episodes himself.

that is brilliant news what are you talking about

Neil DeGrasse Tyson Ruins Your Zombie Fantasies Forever - Video

Love this bit

"just sayin’"

He’s thought about it though. One of the greatest minds of our generation sat down one day and was like “wait, could zombies exist?” And then he did the science thing and was like “nah we’re good.”
